STRONG IMAGE & GOOD PICTURE

For the group show on Friday night in San Miguel de Allende our instructors started our entire show with a "strong image." They chose Petra's blurred picture of the main cathedral at night.

On the first day of the workshop, Raul Touzon spoke to us about good places to photograph. One of the things I remembered about his advice was that the best picture we were going to get that week of the main cathedral would be right after sunset when the sky was deep blue and all the lights were on. There were no fireworks planned for the week we were there. Tom got the picture Raul described after our final edits were done.

Below are these two pictures of the main cathedral. Same place, different photographers. According to our instructors, one is a "strong image" and the other is a "good picture." So, what makes an image strong?

On the "strong image" of the cathedral, I am pretty sure my family members would take me aside with all the best of intentions and offer the following advice, "You know...you really should buy a tripod."

And, before this workshop, I would have agreed. However, I have come to appreciate the value of a blurry image to communicate something beyond a representation of what you see. That is if you *meant* to take a blurry image. The image can communicate mystery of what is to follow and the life always present on the "hardeen" while still giving a sense of place.

The "good picture" of the cathedral satisfies my sense of curiousity about what the main monument in San Miguel de Allende looks like. I find the architecture very interesting and want to see it.

So, I guess it all depends on what you are trying to say with your pictures...Heather
