There has been some talk about the disagreement between Thomas Knoll at Adobe &amp; Nikon over the encryption of some meta-data in the RAW files for Nikon's new cameras. First, some most excellent news (yes, I am a child of the "Bill &amp; Ted" generation :-).   All 23 people from the workshop have agreed to participate in the book project.  All three instructors have agreed to write introductory text for our book.  Raul has offered to edit our photos into one group essay.  I have all slides from 18 people scanned and ready to edit. Some folks have been wondering about switching from film to digital.  Virginia, Arnold and Darius have already purchased their new Nikon D70 cameras since the workshop.  Fresh from a shoot in Kenya, David Alan Harvey inspired us to try digital with his gorgeous pictures from Kenya shot with a Nikon D70.  Plus, Ben had really good results throughout the week with his digital Canon.

I attended the seminar "Publishing the Photographic Book" to gain an overview of what it means to sell a book of photography. (I am enthusiastic...but, not stupid...so expert advice is a good thing :-)

Everyone from the workshop has agreed to be our book!  This is so great!  I finally got in touch with Beatrice and she's sending me a CD with her pictures.  We've received pictures from 18 of 23 people so far.  David Burnham gets big credit and "thank you's" for scanning close to 200 slides late at night to make our deadline for photo l.a.

For the group show on Friday night in San Miguel de Allende our instructors started our entire show with a "strong image."  They chose Petra's blurred picture of the main cathedral at night.


On the first day of the workshop, Raul Touzon spoke to us about good places to photograph. San Miguel de Allende is the oldest city located in the center of the Mexican Republic.  It was founded on September 29th. 1542 by the father Fray Juan de San Miguel. In 1555 became "Villa de San Miguel el Grande" (village of San Miguel the great).  On march 8th, 1826 it received its present name: San Miguel de Allende honoring its founder and Ignacio Allende [Mexico's] Independence hero.

Petra asks: "What in the world is 'pan de huevo', aside from an easter bread.  Since huevos also mean balls in spanish slang--I'm presuming its a slang phrase."


The literal translation is "egg bread", but that's not all of what it means to our group.  Anyone want to weigh in on where the phrase "pan de huevo!" came from and what it means to you?   ...Heather

This "First Cut" was a selection made by Denice of the first batch of pictures I received from everyone.  I sent private feedback via email to each person who sent me their pictures.  For some of the people, I had access to JPEGs of their pictures and they agreed to allow me to post the results of their "First Cuts" here.

This is a "blog" short for web log. It works like a web site with a very specific structure that facilitates informal group communication. Messages are displayed with the most recent post on top.  There are links on the sidebar which will take you to specific postings.
